2.Translation Process
2.1 Before Translation
In the era of information and artificial intelligence, translation,as a traditional“self-employed”industry,also undergoes profound changes in the wave ofglobalization and intelligence. In the past,a translator could work with the help ofdictionaries and various materials. However, this traditional translation model isunable to meet the increasing needs of multilingual large-scale translation projects.Artificial intelligence technology based on big data and corpus technologyincreasingly becomes indispensable.Computer-aided translation(CAT)is the productof the technological development of the times. The paper uses the CAT softwareTrados for auxiliary translation in this translation project.
2.1.1 Translation tools
The source text is Chinese text for science and technology containing manyprofessional terms and vocabulary.Although some professional knowledge ofautomobile and machinery manufacturing is learned in the first-year postgraduate,it isstill not easy to translate scientific and technological knowledge accurately. Therefore, translation tools are conducive to the professionals of translation. In this process, thetranslator adopts the following preparation methods for translation:
a.“Parallel text refers to the source text and its translation that can be read word by word, sentence by sentence”(Li,2004).It is helpful to improve the translationlevel by choosing the appropriate parallel texts.
b.The term base provides by the enterprise.Over the past four years, enterprisesand colleges cooperate in establishing a professional terminology database ofautomotive English. There are 50,000 recorded word treaties to facilitate translators toencounter professional terms. The practice proves that they benefit a lot from the termbase.
c.Google translation,SDL Trados, and other machine translation software areused to translate and polish the structure of the full text.
d.The literature on scientific and technological English translation skills as wellas Newmark semantic translation and communicative translation in CNKI can beconsulted.
2.2 While Translation
The completion of the translation project needs to grasp the work progress ofeach stage. This part describes the pre-translation preparation stage, translationimplementation stage, and post-translation review stage in the translation projectprocess. The paper records the process of the translation plan in details.
2.2.1 Translation process
On August 1,2021,the translator was appointed by an off-campus tutor from theinternship company to obtain the translation source materials.
The translator mainly in charge of the“Braking System Chapter”in theAutomobile maintenance manual.
The project deadline is November 15,2021,and the team members are requiredto complete all translation and proofreading tasks before that date.
After getting the source text, the translator understands the motor model throughinternal materials from the Internet and interprets the problematic words by usingreference books such as domain dictionaries. After accumulating some relevantknowledge and understanding the structure and wording of the source text, thetranslator determines the translation theory and practical strategies.
According to the materials, the study finally formulates the following translationschedule according to the time required for each stage of translation and the overallprocess of the project:
