1.Task Description
1.1 Background of the Task
This translation task comes from the internship unit,an Automobile Co.,Ltd.,whichis a holding subsidiary and limited liability company established in 1954.It is located inLiuzhou,Guangxi,an important industrial town in southern China.It mainly producesmore than 200 varieties of heavy,medium and light commercial vehicles and MPV withmultiple brands.They have always maintained a good brand image and sales volume.
The main task during the internship is to translate materials such as vehiclemaintenance manuals,publicity materials and related worksheets for foreign customers.Since entering the enterprise in July 2021,all interns have conducted systematic practicallearning on automobile production and structure,automobile maintenance and otheraspects.In addition,some lectures on its culture,development and the introduction ofexisting automobile are provided for listening and learning.In the first semester of mygraduate study,the author had a basic study of automobile English knowledge,but it wasonly limited to the study from book knowledge.Entering the enterprise internship gaveauthor an opportunity to closely combine the translation theory with the specific translationpractice,so as to better understand and learn the relevant translation theory,automobilestructure knowledge and operation principle.After the previous comprehension of thecompany and the accumulation of automobile-related knowledge,in September 2021,theperson in charge of the internship unit posted a translation task in the company’s WeC hat group named“Translation Team”:Chinese-English translation of Maintenance Manual ofXX Truck.This manual was written by the company’s engineers and aimed to enable usersto correctly use and maintain the truck,so that it can maximize its benefits.The translationtask assigned by author is the Chinese-English translation of clutch system in Chapter III,with a total of more than 13000 words and the translation time is ten days.
1.2 Significance of the Task
With the export of automobiles,a series of manuals and materials related toautomobiles need to have corresponding English versions for use.The translation of themanual contents such as use and maintenance notice,common fault judgment andtroubleshooting is to facilitate overseas users and maintenance personnel to better grasp theconstruction characteristics of this type of truck and matters related to the use andmaintenance of caution,so as to ensure the normal use and maintenance of truck and seizethe opportunity to better expand overseas market.The most basic requirement of anytranslation activity is to make sure that audiences could understand the translation andaccept its writing style,otherwise it will affect the communication effect of translationactivities.It refers to the overseas market expansion,after-sale service and corporate imageof automobile enterprises.The text content and sentence expression of this maintenancemanual have strong professional characteristics in scientific and technological text.Afterthe translator fully understands the background knowledge and prepares the terminology,the translated text can be directly provided to customers,which can provide realconvenience for overseas customers to use this type of product and contribute to thein-depth communication and cooperation between both parties.
2.Translation Process
