1. Task Description
1.1 Background of the Task
During my internship in a well-known automobile company in Liuzhou, the company arranged for me to translate the entire X Lorry-mounted Crane Operating Instructions and Maintenance Manual into English. It was edited by a truck mounted crane company. The manual is about 13,000 words, it is a guide for enterprises to provide operation and maintenance services for the latest export models in order to meet the needs of overseas markets. It is mainly composed of five parts, the first part is performance parameters and detailed description of the model, the second part is operating instructions of the model, the third part is the skills that the operator needs to master, the forth part is the fault performance and diagnosis methods of the various parts of the model, and the last part is maintenance work items of the model. In scientific and technological texts, especially in informational texts, non-subject sentences frequently appear, and the texts contain accurate, objective and rigorous words. Therefore, it is worthwhile to analyze such sentence patterns to reduce improper translation brings technical comprehension errors and communication barriers to the readers. During translation, it is found that there are a large number of non-subject sentences in the text, so this report takes the non-subject sentence as the main research object.
1.2 Significance of the Task
A non-subject sentence is generally composed of a predicate or a predicate phrase, which refers to a sentence in which the exact subject would not be spoken. A non-subject sentence is different from a subject-predicate sentence, its subject is often omitted or implied. It has certain advantages in some specific contexts, and could be divided into syntactic gaps and pragmatic gaps in terms of grammar.
In theory, scholars at home and abroad have studied the classification, origin and syntactic composition of non-subject sentences in Chinese, and have made some explorations on the English translation techniques of non-subject sentences and obtained solutions. In order to better explore the translation techniques of non-subject sentences, this report guided by Newmark’s communicative translation theory, adopted the method of literature analysis and analyzed the expression form of the non-subject sentences through the key research of the X Lorry-mounted Crane Operating Instructions and Maintenance Manual. It is believed that this translation practice will serve as a reference for the translation techniques of non-subject sentences in automotive engineering technology texts.
In practice, with the further development of foreign trade, more and more Chinese companies entered the international market. Professional and effective operating instructions and maintenance manuals could adapt to the needs of enterprise production and development. With the business development and large-scale production of enterprises, the degree of reliance on the integrity of products is increasing, and the emphasis on equipment maintenance is also increasing. Instructions for use and maintenance manuals of automobiles are instructive in the after-sale of service products. Especially in the sales process of import and export companies in overseas markets, product operation instructions and maintenance manuals play an irreplaceable reference role for business operators and manufacturers. It requires translators to translate such rigorously structured non-subject sentences to achieve the goal of “going out”of technology.
