Laura’s inferiority complex stems from multiple factors. For a start, her mind gets weak as a result of her physical impairment. Secondly, her father’s absence leaves the family in poverty and conflicts. Without their father’s guidance, Laura meets difficulties in interacting with the world. The tense family atmosphere and poor economic condition also increase Laura’s inferior feelings. Furthermore, the cruelty of industrial culture and the bad economic situation in the 1930s aggravate Laura’s sense of insecurity. Being confronted with these challenges, Laura chooses to escape rather than seek solutions by collaborating with others. Laura’s false reaction to these challenges prevents her from establishing a trustworthy relationship with other social members. Because she is cut off from society, her feelings of inferiority become stronger, and she eventually succumbs to inferiority complex.
