David Dabydeen is a British Guyanese novelist,poet and academic.He moved to London,England,from Berbice,Guyana,to reconnect with his father,David Harilal Sookram,ateacher who had relocated to England at the time.At the age of 18,he read English at SelwynCollege,University of Cambridge,England,where he received a bachelor’s degree withhonour.Afterwards,he received a doctorate in 18th-century literature and art from UniversityCollege London in 1982 and a permanent fellowship at the Yale Centre for British Art.From1985 to 1987,he was president of the Caribbean Association,African Association and AsianAssociation for the Teaching of Literature;In 1993,he was elected to the member ofExecutive Board of UNESCO by its member States;From 1997 to 2010,he served asUNESCO Ambassador,who was the youngest member of UNESCO’s Executive Board,elected by the General Councils of all UNESCO Member States.David Dabydeen wasappointed as Guyana’s Ambassador to China in 2010 and served until May 11,2015,theelection of a new administration in Guyana.On top of that,from 1984 to 2017 in academicaspects,he was also in the position of the director of the Caribbean Yesu Persaud Centre forCaribbean Studies and professor of postcolonial literature at the University of Warwick.Inaddition,one of his major achievements in the field of education is to persuade the Chinesegovernment to establish and fund a Confucius Institute at the University of Guyana.

1.2 An Introduction to Disappearance

Disappearance describes the story of a Guyanese engineer who builds a bank in England.The protagonist is a contemporary Guyanese intellectual.Born in a poor family where hismother struggled to support him to get an education,he suffered from poverty and inferiorliving conditions since he was a child.Put up with the humiliation,he devoted all his time andenergy to learning knowledge and skills,abstaining from all activities such as socialintercourse,drinking and womanizing,and carefully learning to be a civilized man in the hopeof making a rise in life through education.He eventually became an engineer as he wishedtied with high education,so far as to act in a manner of British style which is a more Britishmanner than Britisher:wearing suits with leather shoes and practicing a non-accented Englishtone(Du Xingyu,Su Rui,2019),Influenced by British education and science withfull-fledged technology,the protagonist considers he is already a Westernized elite and hopesto walk around the world with this identity.“Me,a West Indian,was born in a new world in anew era”(Hu Zongfeng,2014).He flows across the Caribbean to the shores of Hastings’ beach in England working for the construction of the bank.During this time,he begins to lookinto the past which he has long slid over and gradually discovers that he will never have aWestern face even though he may learn advanced knowledge of Water ConservancyConstruction(Cui Minglu,2016).In addition,Driving by what the protagonist saw and heardwhile building the bank,the story also shows the protagonist’s transformation of hisperception of British culture after getting along with a white woman,Mrs.Rutherford,and hisdetermination to return to the cultural identity of his own nation.It can be said that the plot ofthe novel is motivated by two lines in parallel(Liu Jing,2016).
