CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
The idea of this research is originated from the writer’s interest on sustainable tourism development studies, especially in Nigeria where a lot of tourist attractions are dilapidated due to negligence and lack of proper management by the corresponding authorities and the researcher chose this case study because of its unique and rich cultural heritage which stands out among the different tourist destinations in Nigeria. Also, with the recent effect of COVID-19 on the tourism industry, the UNWTO acknowledges that the safe resumption of tourism activities will continue to largely depend on a coordinated response among countries in terms of travel restrictions, harmonized safety, hygiene protocols to help restore consumer confidence, and above all sustainable tourism.
Idanre hill have gained a lot of attention from the government, researchers, and tourists in Nigeria since it was enlisted by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites. The purpose of this study is to give insights into the current situation of Tourism in the chosen area as a whole, identify ways in which sustainability can be incorporated into the study area, make recommendations for successful sustainability, which will improve and sustain the case study site by making all the attractions accessible to tourists who will help in creating an image that will attract more tourists.
Tourism has been defined differently and some authors choose to define the term with somewhat similarities. It is serious and yet difficult for analysts in the tourism industry to come to a compromise with regards to a universal definition of tourism. The process of visiting for at least one night for leisure and holiday, business and professional or other tourism purposes among others, are the reasons for tourism including cultural, historical, recreational, environmental, and ethnic considerations. However, tourism is a socio-cultural and economic phenomenon whereby people move from one place to another outside their normal environment for many purposes. It also involves the activities of people traveling places away from their homes for leisure and recreation, fun, business, and other purposes. People leave their immediate environment to other places based on their personal needs and motive which differs among individuals.
1.2 Research problem
Tourism, undeniably is one the major economic boosters in all the regions of the globe and the target of any government is to develop its tourism and hospitality sector to derive revenues. The problems often associated with sustainable tourism development plans are quite enormous and therefore should not be neglected. The study area chosen for this research is burdened with several problems such as lack of standard development strategies, capacity building, lack of basic tourism infrastructure, improper implementation of tourism policies, and lack of skilled personnel in the tourism sector among others. This research proposes to address some of these problems which are the major setback in the development of Idanre hills.
CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 The concept of sustainable development
To have a better understanding of the principles and objectives of sustainable development in tourism, it is important to define the term itself “sustainable development” Leonard and Carson (2005). But however, John (2001) gave the simplest definition of sustainable development as a process that takes into consideration what the present generation have inherited and should be left for the next generation in the same condition or in a better condition than when it was inherited. Despite the global acceptance of sustainable development, there remains a lack of unison and harmony over the actual meaning of this term. Ayeni and Ebohon (2012) identified Sustainable development to be an organizing principle tha
