Then she wrote to God what happened to her and her inner feeling towards her surrounding people. Her two children were taken away by her stepfather Alfonso secretly and she could do nothing but to accept the fact. After a short time, she was dumped to Albert who was a father with several children. Then her endless miserable life began. At home, Albert treated her as a slave and forced her to do everything, such as working, cooking and cleaning. Celie, however, was scolded and abused by him and even by those children.

Since the publication of The Color Purple, researchers at home and abroad have paid increasing attention to it. Some speak highly of this novel, but also there are some scholars hold negative opinions to it. Although some critical comments on this novel, it is still well-accepted by the majority of researchers in the whole world. Therefore, it is necessary to summarize the researches on this novel at home and abroad. Through the overview of foreign and domestic studies, this part presents the purpose and framework of this thesis, aiming to prove the feasibility and the value of the thesis.
2.1 Overseas research
Alice Walker is the outstanding female writer in contemporary American literature and has made a great contribution to the development of African American literature. As a prolific writer and famous activist, she published a great number of books concerning women rights, among which The Color Purple was regarded as the most popular work and her greatest achievement. Once its publication in New York in 1982, it became the best-seller in America even in the whole world and won the honor of Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and National Book Award for Alice Walker, which made her the first woman writer owning it.
