Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Over the 5,000 years evolution of the Chinese nation as a civilization, the Chinese nation produced a great number of classics in politics, literature, philosophy, and etc., forming indispensible components in the world civilization. Many Chinese classics were translated into English and other foreign languages and attracted much attention.
China intends to strengthen its soft power in the new century as the acceleration of globalization and intensification of multicultural communication. Translation of Chinese classics into other languages plays an important role in multicultural communication and helps spread Chinese culture, facilitating foreign readers to sense and be familiar with the spirits and essentials of the Chinese culture. To make Chinese voices heard is nowadays a national endeavor, increasing number of Chinese classics having been translated into English and other languages.
In order to strengthen soft power of Chinese culture, China initiates strategies for Chinese culture outgoing to acquaint the world with China. Driven by the strategies for chinese culture outgoing,more and more China scholars and translators have devoted themselves to the English translation of China’s classic works, which has contributed to the right of discourse.
1.2 Research Purpose
Firstly, this thesis is intended to make an tentative study on Shih-shuo Hsin-yü and its two English versions, from the perspective of translation ethics proposed by Andrew Chesterman. It also analyzes whether the translators have followed the translation ethics in the English versions of Shi Shuo Hsin-yü and Shih-shuo Hsin-yü: Paintings. Did it represented the Wei-Jin Spirit?
Secondly, this thesis attempts to analyse the thoughts, words and deeds of the scholars of the Six Dynasties Periods from the perspective of translation ethics. And to analyse their appearance and character in the Six Dynasties Periods. It is mainly through three aspects of personal behaviors,casual conversation and transcendence as the entry point. This thesis also conduct in-depth analysis on the representative scholars. By using this manner to explore the phenomenon of English translation in order to enrich the study on A New Account of Tales of the World.
Then, how did the Wei-Jin Spirit manifested itself in different scholars? How to express the Wei-Jin Spirit by showing the image of ancient scholars?
Finally, the present thesis is intended to make an tentative study on the two English versions, from the perspective of translation ethics proposed by Andrew Chesterman, making a contrast on the linguistic representations in the target language of the two versions, and examining the ethics reflected by such representation.
Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Previous Studies on Shih-shuo Hsin-yü
Shih-shuo Hsin-yu occupies an important position in the history of Chinese culture.It mainly records some anecdotes of the gentry in the the Six Dynasties Periods.
Shih-shuo Hsin-yü is the peak of Zhiren’s novel during the Six Dynasties Periods. It is an important literary work in the history of China. Many scholars have studied A New Account of Tales of the World. They analyzed author, title, style of the Chinese scholar, Ideological tendencies, characteristics of literary aesthetics and cultural significance, and the characters are thoroughly researched. Therefore, the research perspectives of A New Account of Tales of the World have been extensively developed and diversified. But it has relatively little research in English.
2.1.1 Studies on Shih-shuo Hsin-yü at Home
In China, the research on Shih-shuo Hsin-yü was divided into the following angles: its author and book title, style type, cultural aesthetic characteristics and cultural significance.
The first perspective is the study of authors and book titles.
