higher level.In this part,case analysis at lexical level is discussedby adopting translation techniques,such as addition and omission,to meet or even gobeyond readers’horizon of expectation for the historical and cultural information inthe text.

3.1.1 Addition

Addition means supplying necessary words in translation,making the versiongrammatically correct,semantically clear,rhetorically sound,logically acceptable,and culturally appropriate(Lian,2006:129).As it mentioned before,lots of historicalfigures,places and culture-loaded words and expressions in the text are rich ofhistorical and cultural information but hard to know by ordinary target readers.So,thetranslator added some additions for these words and phrases in the translation.

4.1 Major Findings

After completing the translation report by adopting various translationtechniques to comprehensively analyse the source text at lexical,syntactic anddiscourse level under the guidance of reception aesthetics theory,the translatorobtained the following several findings.

First,for translation at lexical level with much historical content,addition withappendix and attachment can provide more information to great extent for targetreaders.Besides,considering readers’language convention and reading habit,restructuring for sentence order and annotation for rhetorical devices not onlyeliminate reading barriers for readers,but also arouse their interests for the history andculture of the US and attracts readers for this text.Based on these,it can be seen thatwhen translating travelogues,these translation techniques are feasible for showingabundant history and culture,which is also a key factor to fascinate readers.

Second,this translation practice proved that reception aesthetics theory has agreat value in guiding the translation of travelogues.In the previous translationpractice,quite a lot translators used this theory to guide the translation of literaryworks,especially children’s literature,but there are few studies on the case analysesof the translation of travelogues,let alone travelogues with so much background ofhistory and culture.For the reason that such texts contain rich historical and culturalbackground information,the hidden information within the text can be shown to readers.On all counts,this translation report proved that it is workable to translatetravelogues under the guidance of reception aesthetics theory.
