2.2 While-translation
As the novel is featured with plenty of cultural-loaded words, which poses a great challenge to the translator. Firstly, the translator identified and classified the culture-loaded words of Joy of Life, and then listed them in the table located in Appendix 1. Secondly, intra-lingual translation was performed with the help of the Modern Chinese Dictionary. The translator tried to figure out the Chinese meaning of cultural-loaded words and then compared and analyzed the exact meaning of every word according to the context of the original text. Thirdly, the translator conducted the inter-lingual translation with the aid of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English and A Dictionary of Official Titles in Imperial China, and determined the English translation of cultural-loaded words with reference to the context. Lastly, the translator finished the full translation of the original text, and reviewed and checked if the culture-loaded words were appropriately translated as required in the context of the original text. And then the translator read the original text again and finalized the translation of every culture-loaded word based on the context of the original text so as to ensure culture-loaded words were accurately translated and comprehensible to target readers, and to maintain the original flavor and cultural features of the fiction.
