The translator finds that the fiction features traditional Chinese cultural elements, which is a bottleneck restricting the translation of it.[9] Therefore, how to reproduce cultural connotation and to help target readers effectively acquire the essence of Chinese culture is pretty critical, which also presents the translator with challenges. Thus, the focus of this report is on the translation methods and strategies of culture-loaded words. The translator first identifies and classifies all the culture-loaded words encountered during the process of translation, as well as the translation methods and techniques used, and then concludes the most applicable translation methods and techniques to different types of culture-loaded words to provide a reference for future translations in this filed and to better show the distinct charm of Chinese culture to some extent.
Chapter Two Overview of the Translation Process
2.1 Pre-translation
It is without a doubt that adequate preparation before translation is of great importance. The translator should familiarize herself with background information, the plot, and linguistic features of the original text before the translation to lay a solid foundation for high-quality translation. Therefore, the translator, firstly, read through the original text three times and marked out unfamiliar or incomprehensible words or sentences so as to understand the meaning of the original text. And then the translator watched the TV series Joy of Life twice to familiarize herself with the plot and watched the TV series Joy of Life adapted from the popular web fiction of the same name with English subtitles to learn its linguistic features and translation difficulties.
Secondly, the translator prepared some translation tools, such as Modern Chinese Dictionary, A Dictionary of Official Titles in Imperial China, Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, CNKI Dictionary, Google Translate Tool, and so on. The translator also searched for the website of the electronic encyclopedia to figure out the difficulties of the source text.
Thirdly, the translator read English version of Chinese web fictions of similar subject matters on translation websites such as WuxiaWorld, Webnovel, and
