1.1 Research background
In 2009, The Untamed, based on the Chinese novel Mo Dao Zu Shi, became a hit after itwas broadcast on the Tencent TV and began to attract audiences in other countries. “TheUntamed is an online play about ancient costumes and immortals. It focuses on the two maincharacters, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, working together to explore the truth of the past andprotect people’s peace and happiness”. “Because of the beautiful scenery in the play and theactor’s typical Chinese costume, The Untamed quickly became popular overseas” (Liu, 2019,p.57).
In October, the show was released on Netflix, the largest streaming video website in theUnited States, which marked the beginning of its international reach. The release of The Untamed overseas could be regarded as a relatively successful cultural export case of China inrecent years.
In recent years, the doubts of foreigners to Chinese cultural export have never stopped,such as the establishment of the Confucius Institute worldwide. Actually, it is a problembetween the initiative of cultural export and cultural acceptance. It can be seen from thespread of the play that a successful cultural export should have high-quality content and beaccepted by the audience from the very beginning. If the former is an objective factor, thenthe latter is a subjective one. In order to make overseas audiences actively and empathicallyaccept the content exported by Chinese culture, it is necessary to spread Chinese culture in away that overseas audiences can understand and accept.
The requirement of subtitle translation of ancient Chinese TV programs differs from thatof movies, documentaries, and TV shows about modern life. The Untamed involves manyChinese cultural elements, which will definitely cause some difficulties in its translation work.The success of The Untamed overseas is inseparable from the significant contribution of itssubtitle translation. As Chinese cultural export has become an important measure to enhanceits international influence, China’s comprehensive national strength continues to increase andits links with countries worldwide are increasingly strengthened. Before The Untamed, therehave been other TV series released on Netflix, such as Empresses in the Palace（《甄嬛传》）,but the influence is limited. The Untamed rose interest of audiences from many countries,including Japan, Thailand, the U.S, and other American countries, which is one of the reasonswhy the thesis chooses The Untamed as the research object.
1.2 Research purpose and significance
As it mentioned before, the overseas broadcast of The Untamed is a kind of culturalexport. To achieve its purpose depends on the subtitles that can be understood and accepted byoverseas audiences. Subtitle translation is a type of translation. The essence of subtitletranslation in this play is information and cultural communication. The thesis’s primary purpose is to analyze the techniques and methods adopted in subtitle translation of TheUntamed from the perspective of Lasswell’s 5W-mode. The thesis will conduct a case studyand explore several questions: What is the relationship between the 5W-mode and subtitletranslation? What kind of techniques and methods do translators adopted in thecommunication process based on the 5W- mode?
The thesis is a study of the subtitle translation of The Untamed from the perspective of5W-mode. The research significance of the thesis is as follows:
Theoretically, the research on the combination of the 5W-mode and subtitle translation,have broadened the content of communication studies and enriched the research topics.
