INTRODUCTION
Background of the Report
The report is the summary of the translation of the chosen materials of The Cambridge History of Africa which is a great work about the history of Africa. The series of the book has not been translated into Chinese yet at home and the author’s choice of it is original for the translation study, to some extent. The Cambridge History of Africa is a non-literature historical work and the translation of such works at home is rare. Apart from that, the global village has strengthened the relationship between China and Africa and the introduction of works about African history and culture is very necessary to deepen the brotherhood between the two nations. The attitudes of the African people towards their own history and culture under the influence of imperialism and their struggle for their cultural maintenance and independence since the economic globalization are worth our meditation.
The author chose the representative excerpts of The Cambridge History of Africa: From 1870 to 1905 with the employment of the Functionalist Skopos Theory and translated them into Chinese as the materials for the Master’s Degree. The author’s choice of the theory can enrich the studies of the translation of non-literature historical works and make the readers better understand the hidden meanings of the original texts and catch the author’s inclination of writing them.
CONCLUSION
The translation report is an analysis of the translation activity of the chosen materials of The Cambridge History of Africa: From 1870 to 1905 with the guidance of the Functionalist Skopos Theory put forward by Nida. The author concludes the translation report from the following three aspects: the major findings of the author, the limitations of the report and suggestions from the author.
The Major Findings of the Author
In the translation report, the author has gained some findings from three perspectives: the importance of the preparations for the translation of a non-literature historical work, the application of the Functionalist Skopos Theory to the translation practice and the case analysis of the translation principles for the translation activity.
