Being the top-notch innovative talents of a nation and reserve talents with great potentials, postgraduates play an irreplaceable role in the cause of building socialism with Chinese characteristics and in promoting comprehensive national strength. Academic reading, a key part in postgraduate’ scientific research activities, is crucial to writing and research in college but often gets overlooked. Recently, China’s higher education has entered the post-popularization stage and correspondingly, the training quality of college students and master students has increasingly become the focus of public concern (Zhou Qikun, 2021). In addition, under the background of the continuous expansion of postgraduate enrollment, the number of applicants for master’s degree has shown an upsurging trend in recent years, especially in 2019, 2020 and 2021. In order to guarantee the quality of postgraduate education, attention should be gradually paid to the academic reading training for postgraduate students, which can function as a breakthrough of improving learning quality. 

For postgraduates, academic English reading engagement (AERE) is an essential part of postgraduates’ scientific research activities. On the one hand, by reading literatures postgraduates can track the frontier dynamics of various research fields, broaden their professional horizons and have inspirations for research. On the other hand, they can narrow down their research gaps, obtain solutions and ideas to problems in the literature, and improve the skills in thesis writing (Zhang Manxia, 2021). Most of the authoritative information in academic comes from English journals, and currently with the rapid development of scientific and technological research and the update of professional knowledge, the number of English literatures published in relevant professional journals increases dramatically every year, which shows the importance of academic English reading. However, most postgraduates in China are weak in academic English reading ability, focusing on reading Chinese literatures. 

1.2 Research Significance

Postgraduate students from two universities in Hangzhou are selected as the research objects. A questionnaire survey is adopted to explore postgraduate students’ AERE, with data collected and analyzed. The basic status quo of postgraduates’ AERE is summarized and described. The independent sample T-test, one-way analysis of variance and post hoc multiple comparison are used to evaluate whether there are significant differences in AERE between different groups. The structural equation software is used to construct the model, with the relationship among various dimensions and the influence path summarized. In-depth understanding of postgraduates’ AERE has important implications for optimizing academic English reading practice for postgraduate students. 

This study on postgraduates’ AERE enriches the field of reading engagement and promotes postgraduates’ exploration of academic issues. The implications for future research include the following two aspects:

This study outlines the basic situation of postgraduates’ AERE and discusses whether there are significant differences in AERE between different groups and how the four dimensions affect each other. Specifically, this paper summarizes the current state of postgraduates’ AERE via questionnaire survey and analyses engagement differences in different groups, with influence pathways of each dimension explored. Moreover, it provides guidance for college teachers’ teaching of academic English reading courses and helps postgraduate students to carry out high-quality academic English reading.
