Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Intertextuality symbolizes a kind of deconstruction and critical consciousness, it is initially used in the study of literary criticism, especially in the field of poetics and stylistics. Intertextuality can explore the relationship between the literary world and the outside world, as well as the relationship between pure literary texts, which constitutes two interpretation paths of the study of intertextuality in the broad and narrow sense. The study on intertextuality of political discourse can not only analyze the rules of language from the internal aspects of texts, but also deconstruct political discourse by combining with external texts such as history and culture. Political discourse is full of a large number of intertextual elements. When the author states and repeats familiar or unshakable truths, using of intertextuality can enhance the persuasiveness of speeches, increase the credibility of politicians, strengthen the influence on the audience, and contribute to the realization of political goals. Intertextuality is a powerful and beneficial linguistics means, any discourse practice is constituted by absorbing other discourses in complex way. As the head of a country, leaders must construct their political discourse purposefully and precisely. The political discourse of leaders not only embodies the national will, national image, but also reflect their distinct individual personality and linguistic characteristics. Therefore, the study of leaders’ political discourse is an important entry point to explore the political trend and diplomatic trend of the United States. The value of intertextuality is not only reflected in the use of linguistic strategies, but also an important way to understand the social knowledge of a country. Culture is the most precious treasure of human civilization. The study of intertextuality is also helpful to deepen the understanding of the cultural differences, promote communication between different cultures, and achieve harmonious coexistence between cultures.
1.2 Research Purpose and Significance
In the previous studies on intertextuality, the texts are mostly selected from some news discourse and commercial discourse, the research on intertextuality of political discourse is slightly insufficient. Therefore, this study selects some American political discourse as research materials. The analysis of the intertextual phenomena in political discourse can help us to understand the characteristics of political discourse better and explore the social pragmatic functions of intertextuality. From the perspective of critical discourse analysis, this thesis aims to describe and analyze the types of specific intertextuality and generic intertextuality in political discourse; interpret the generative mechanism of intertextuality in political discourse; and combine with the social contexts of intertextuality in political discourse to explore the social pragmatic functions of intertextuality.
This thesis is full of theoretical significance and practical value. The significance of this study can be summarized. Firstly, the research of intertextuality is an important direction in domestic linguistics research, and critical discourse analysis is one of the important perspectives in political discourse research. Therefore, from the critical discourses analysis theory to explore the social pragmatic functions of intertextuality in political discourse, it can not only refine and repair the original research model of political discourse, but also explore the relationship between language, ideology and power which hidden under political discourse. In practice, the analysis of the phenomenon of intertextuality in American political discourse can provoke the thoughts on the construction of our political discourse, help our country to make corresponding discourse strategies, and provide a basis fo
