6.1 Major Findings
This thesis is an action research on English reading teaching of junior highschool under the guidance of activity-based learning concept.The research subjectsare junior high school students of second grade.The author uses questionnaire,interview and test as research instruments to explore the effectiveness of applying theactivity-based learning concept in English reading teaching of junior high school.Through literature review,the author analyzes the current state of research on Englishreading instruction and focuses on two research questions as follows:What factorsneed to be considered in improving English reading instruction of junior high schoolsunder the guidance of activity-based learning concept?How to develop Englishreading level of junior high school students through English reading teachingactivities under the guidance of the activity-based learning concept?After two roundsof the action research,through the analysis of the teaching sample,teachers’questionnaire survey,two reading tests and students’interview,two main researchfindings can be demonstrated in this thesis.
Firstly,there are at least three essential factors in improving English readinginstruction of junior high school under the guidance of activity-based learning concept.The first factor is teacher’s accurate understanding of the activity-based learningconcept.Form the analysis of teachers’questionnaire,we can easily find that mostteachers hold the view on their accurate understanding of the activity-based learningconcept that can be an important factor in English reading instruction.And besides,this factor is largely influenced by their in-depth understanding of English readingpassage and their design of English reading activities.The second factor is teacher’s accurate analysis of learning conditions.Based on the comparison of the averagescore between the pre-test and the post-test,it’s clearly shown that English readingachievements of most students have been improved due to teacher’s carefulconsideration of their learning conditions before making English reading instructiondesign under the guidance of activity-based learning concept.The third factor isteacher’s mastery of important and difficult points in English reading passage.According to the analysis of the teaching sample,we can find the teacher has a goodmastery of important and difficult points of that English text,so she can also have aclearer awareness on English reading activities designed with the characteristics suchas comprehensiveness,relevance and practicality.
