1.1 Background Knowledge of Jack Ma and His Speech
Jack Ma is Ma Yun’s English name who is a successful entrepreneur in China. He is the chairman, lead founder and chief executive officer of the Alibaba Networking Technology Company. On October 10th in 1964 Jack Ma was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. He graduated from Hangzhou Normal School and won the foreign language degree in 1988. After graduating, he worked as a lecturer in English and International Trade at the Hangzhou University of Electronic Science and Technology from 1988 to 1995. Then in 1995, he founded China Pages, which was believed to be the first Internet-based company in China. From then on he focused on the research of internet. As it turned out that he was succeed. In 1999, he founded Alibaba group which rapidly became the biggest Business to Business electronic commerce platform in the whole world. Taobao subordinating to the Alibaba group has already been the biggest personal trading internet in Asia. In 2001, Jack Ma was selected by the World Economic Forum as a “Young Global Leader” and chosen by CCTV as one of the “Top 10 Business Leaders of the Year”. In the following years, his success has brought him many other honors, such as “World's Best CEOs”, “Business Leaders of the Decade Award”, “Asia’s Heroes of Philanthropy”.
1.2 Contents and Features of the Speech
This whole speech was just an ordinary public speech, which lasted for about 50 minutes in Columbia University. Jack Ma took more than twenty minutes to introduce Alibaba group, including its founding, its development and its future. He explained in detail on its constitution. There are mainly five parts in Alibaba group, including Alibaba.com, Taobao.com, Alipay, Aliclub Computing and Yahoo China. Then he explained why Alibaba can make itself to more than two hundred countries around the world. That’s because of his belief that is Customer is No.1; employee is No.2; shareholder is No.3. During the whole speech, he disclosed to us a truth, which is continuing to serve for the customer, and then you all make progress constantly. Money is just appendage. In the next time quantum, Jack Ma did the interaction with the audience. Questions were brought up one by one, and he gave the answers earnestly and detailedly. What is necessary to be mentioned is that the whole process of speech was full of humor, sagacity and joy. It includes all kinds of questions, but most of them are about Alibaba group.
