From the What Works for Students Report (Pliny Soocoormanee Xavier Khan, 2010), six themes are thought to have an impact on students. For me, a newly enrolled student, I figured out the best 5 which is fit for me as follows:
(1) Sense of belonging
For me, sense of belonging is quite important. No one can live alone. When I was in my home country, parents, teachers and friends they always supported me and shared my joys and sadness. It’s hard to find that kind of emotions in a new place. In order to be accepted and supported by the new environment and new friends, I tried to make myself busy. To be familiar with the university and the city, to join in some students communities, to make new friends there help a lot.
(2) Responsive lecturers
Responsive lecturers mean a lot for me and other students studying abroad. Lecturers are always busy; at first I thought they are a little bit coldness. It’s understandable, because there are hundreds of students in the university, and they cannot remember all his/her students. What I did is to seize every opportunities to communicate with my lecturers, whenever I have any questions, whatever how poor my English is at the very beginning, they were patient to answer my questions with warm smile, that’s really a great inspiration and a huge support for a newcomer just like me.
(3) Social learning environment
I thought social learning environment means whenever I have questions, in addition to ask for help from lecturers, classmates and friends, I could get the answers from facilities provided by the university. The more the social learning facilities would have, the better the studying and living could be. So the guidance is important, besides, I have a strong willing to get familiar with all the facilities, the positive attitude help me to get a social learning environment.
(4) Interactive pedagogies
In the university life, we have many opportunities to attending lectures and other activities. It’s really good to take a form of interactive pedagogy. This kind of studying method is a little bit different with that in China, that’s way at first Chinese students might be shy and don’t want to take part in the discussions. Every time before I took part in the lectures, I did a lot of researches on the topics, the advanced preparations help me to join in the interactive atmosphere.
(5) Cultural diversity
Cultural diversity really exists and bothers new comers, such as dietary habit, language habit, and so on. Everyone studying abroad would face such a problem. I think the best way to overcome the inconvenient of cultural diversity is communication. There are a lot of ways help communicating, reading the local newspapers, watching the local TV programmes, discussing the differences between two different cultures, can not only make new friends, but also let me be a part of the new environment gradually.
