Personal Statement-MBA
Having over three and a half years of professional work experience in hospitality and e-commerce development since graduation from college, I am now pursing MBA study at the renowned ** Graduate School of Management in an aspiration to achieve career advancement with the best possible qualifications.
In 1999, I graduated with a BA degree from the Department of English Language and International Studies at ** in Beijing, China. By way of background, the ** is operated by the Chinese’s best and brightest students with intensive training in languages and international affairs in preparation for future high-level diplomatic careers. Even in this kind of prestigious environment, I stood out with an unusual drive and commitment to excellence. For four full academic years, I maintained a GPA of approximately 3.9 on a 4.0 scale, thus was rewarded the highly competitive ** Merit Fellowships every year. In the summer of 1998, after vigorous selection process, I had the opportunity to serve as an interpreter at the State’s Guest House in Beijing for the visiting U.S. Delegation led by the then U.S. President Bill Clinton. I was one of the 4 students who eventually worked at the villa that accommodated the President, his family and chief members of the White House. I believe that my undergraduate study at ** has made me academically qualified for an intensive MBA program in an English-speaking country.
My keenness on business administration was developed upon the start of my professional career. After a brief stint as a part-time TV reporter at a provincial station, I joined the ** Hotel, one of the most luxurious international hotels in South West China, where I worked with and learned from management professionals of 15 different nationalities. Initially as an English Teacher in the Human Resources Department, I quickly moved up the corporate ladder in two months to become the Assistant Training Manager due to my outstanding job performance and managerial potential. Reporting directly to the Director of Human Resources, I was responsible for leading, planning and implementing training and development programs fro over 600 employees of the hotel. My responsibilities also included controlling annual training budget. Meanwhile, I periodically joined or conducted management skills sessions and was certified in “Training Skills Workshop”. This experience with the ** sparkled my interest in management science and honed my skills as a manager within a team environment.
A year later, seeking new challenges in a high-tech field, I joined ** (Shenzhen branch), one of the world’s leading e-commerce solution providers for merchandise traders worldwide, to head the China Training team as Training Officers. In this capacity, I am responsible for leading and implementing both online and classroom training programs for the company’s users in China on the upgrades of our e-commerce platform database. I also participate in the development of e-Learing solutions for our customers. In the company’s twice-a-year performance appraisals, I have been able to receive a high rating interpreted as “exceeding job expectations”. In April 2002, I was transferred from Shenzhen to Global Sources’ Beijing branch in order to better support our audience groups in North China. In this innovative multi-national company, I have not only witnessed one of the success patterns of technology-oriented modern business, but also felt a distinct need for continued learning and growth to move into an upper-level management position. I have started to understand the value of an MBA at his point of my career. My education and professional experience have provided me with an excellent introduction to the business world. Attaining an MBA is a logical and major step for me in preparing for a bright and successful managerial career.
My short-team career aspiration is to return to Global Sources as a senior manager or, alternatively, to become an executive in a big intern
