Introduction 引言
The film "12 Angry Men" is a narrative about a jury looking to establish a verdict pertaining to a murder case, which entails young boy who had been accused of the murder of his father. At first, almost every member of the jury, except one, agrees that the boy is guilty. Throughout the rest of the film, the one member of the jury who is unsure about the guilt of the boy brings up enough reasonable doubt for the whole jury so that each member individually decides if the boy is guilty or not. Eventually, after heated discussions, the jury members are convinced that the boy is not guilty (12 Angry Men, 1957). The movie has portrayed various theories related to social psychology. This paper will discuss these theories in the following areas: group process, change of attitude, and conformity.
Conformity
Within the context of the film, and the situation that the jury members were in, conformity appears to be a dangerous device. The movie portrays the power of normative and informational social influence, which are theories that were introduced by Solomon Asch, Muzafer Sherif, among other researchers (Barrett, 2017). In line with the informational social influence theory, people conform because they have belief in the interpretation of other individuals regarding a situation, and they believe that such an interpretation is more valid and salient than their interpretation (Barrett, 2017).
Judging the interpretations of other individuals regarding an ambiguous event usually leads to the conformity that is a result of the informational social influence. The processes of decision making that are described in the movie can be explained using this theory.
Conformity, as a result of social influence, is evident in the first parts of the movie. Inside the jury room, an initial vote precludes heated discussions about the innocence of the young boy. Because the vote was taken publicly, room for normative social influence has been given, and it is at this point that the aspect of social influence or conformity comes in because no one wishes to look like he is deviant. Hesitancy is evident as the members of the jury cast their initial vote. It is more evident among the eleven members who voted that the boy is not innocent. This can be regarded as a weak conviction that is influenced by the guilty majority vote.
Two of the jury members clearly demonstrate normative social influence. One of these men, even before the vote is taken, declares that the boy is guilty. The other man interjects as soon as the vote is taken that "There should always be one." Both jury members make an effort to exploit normative social influence and convince the rest of the members that voting guilty is applicable.
Informational social influence is seen through the time constraints that the jury members are subjected to. Perceived pressure on the jurors, affects the jury process and significantly leads to conformity, which is in line with the normative informational social influence. Time is a significant factor that determines the normative social influence in the film. Also, the jury experiences an additional time constraint because
