An Analysis of the Re-Writing Approach of Translator’s Subjectivity
---- With the Cases Studies of the Three Chinese Versions of Gone with the Wind
keywords:translation studies, language, translator
1. Introduction
1.1 Background knowledge
The nature of translation has long been an important topic in translation studies. It is a field full of change and diversified viewpoints. Before the 1970’s when the linguistic school was dominating the translation research, people thought that the process of translation belongs to the re-explanation of the linguistic structure of the source language in the target language (Catford, 1965). As a result, translation was considered to be a comparative linguistic study. The task of the translator is to render the language code of the source language into that of the target language according to the grammatical rules of the latter. So, according to the viewpoint of the linguistic school, the research of translation is regarded as the comparison of the linguistic structure between the source language and the target language. In its very essence, translation is totally a passive process of understanding the writer in the source language by the translator. The linguistic school completely denied the subjectivity of the translator .
5. Conclusion
A translation will not be considered successful if it fails to enable the target readers to understand and appreciate it, therefore, besides making readers comprehend all the information of the source language, as the major part of the process of translating and creating, translators should also be able to have readers grasp the cultural messages hidden in the source language and eliminate the cultural barriers by exerting their subjectivity. As a result, the role played by the translator is very important in the cross-cultural communication between the writer and the reader in the target language. It is because of this that the whole process of translating is crucial in linking the cultural gap between the two language systems and the cultural accumulation of the translator is important in influencing the effectiveness of the translated works.
