Chapter OneIntroduction
1.1 Research background
Lexical bundles refer to lexical programs that occur frequently in language inputand are stored and extracted as a whole(Wray,2002).In the process of second languageacquisition,the learning and use of lexical bundles is of great significance.The study oflexical bundles abroad has a history of more than 100 years.As early as the end of the1970s,linguists have confirmed that lexical bundles played an important role in thelanguage use and second language acquisition for the native speakers and other learners(Wray,2002).Domestic research is later than other countries and develops rapidly afterthe year 2000.With the gradual attention of domestic scholars to lexical bundles,moreand more researches have emerged.The definition of lexical bundles(Ma,2011)andresearch paradigms have become mature,providing help for follow-up scholars tofurther explore.
The so-called corpus refers to the language that has actually appeared in real life.Corpus is a collection of language materials.The history of Chinese corpus linguistics isnot long,but it develops rapidly.Chinese corpus linguistics began at the end of the 20thcentury.From the initial introduction of foreign corpora,retrieval tools,researchmethods and achievements to the construction of a large corpus with Chinesecharacteristics,the earliest corpus built in China was the JDEST(English for Scienceand Technology Corpus)created by Professor Yang Huizhong of Shanghai Jiaotong University in the 1980s.In this short period of 40 years,the construction of the corpushas achieved fruitful results,and is closely integrated with linguistics.It has made greatprogress in the fields of vocabulary,semantics,discourse text analysis,sociolinguistics,stylistics,language teaching,historical linguistics,dialectology,psycholinguistics,cultural studies and social psychology(Mu and Yin,2001).It can be seen from this thatthe method of corpus to study vocabulary,even lexical bundles,is mature andachievable.The powerful function of corpus will provide a more convenient means forthe study of lexical bundles.
1.2 Research purpose
Since the importance of lexical bundles has been gradually recognized at home andabroad,more and more scholars have focused on the research of the relationshipbetween lexical bundles and academic English writing,such as abstracts from articles ininternational journals.Following the footsteps of predecessors,this dissertation alsofocuses on the lexical bundles in the abstracts of international journals to explore theinterdisciplinary differences.
This paper will compare the use of lexical bundles in academic internationaljournal abstracts of different disciplines according to the structural framework of Biberet al.and the functional framework of Hyland.In view of this,this paper has two self-built corpora,and compares and analyzes the characteristics,structures andfunctions of the four-word lexical bundles in the two corpora.The purpose is to explorethe differences in the use of lexical bundles in academic writing abstracts,so thatteachers can carry out explicit teaching of lexical bundles with reference to internationaljournal papers in future,so that students can learn more about the common lexicalbundles in academic paper writing and understand the functional characteristics of theirhabitual use,actively cultivate the awareness of lexical bundles,effectively control thenegative transfer of mother tongue,and continuously improve their level of secondlanguage academic writing.
