Angela Carter is one of the most famous female writers in contemporary English literature. Her uniqueness has attracted extensive attention from scholars at home and abroad. She is not only a novelist, but also a journalist, playwright, critic and essayist. Angela Carter was born in 1940 and died in 1992. Even though she died young, she left many excellent literary works. She wrote nine novels in her lifetime. They include Shadow Dance, The Magic Toyshop, Several Perceptions, Heroes and Villains, Love, The Infernal Desire Machines Of Dr. Hoffman, The Passion Of New Eve, Nights At The Circus and Wise Children. Her four collections of short stories are Fireworks, The Bloody Chamber, Black Venus and American Ghosts Old World Wonders. She has also written three books on literary criticism, including The Sadeian Women: An Exercise In Cultural History, Nothing Sacred: Selected Writings and Wayward Girls And Wicked Women: An Anthology Of Subversive Stories. There are also numerous essays, news reports, and poetry written by her.

Angela Carter has written various literary works and won various awards. Several Perceptions won the Somerest Maugham Award. The Magic Toyshop won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize. Nights at the circus won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Bloody Chamber won the Cheltenham Literary Festival Prize. Wise Children is the last novel written by Angela Carter, and is considered to be an important embodiment of her feminist views. In Wise Children, Carter described a new feminist culture and concept, in which the living condition of individual women became the main concern. This novel tells the story of the legendary lives of Dora Chance and Nora Chance.

A search of foreign academic websites reveals that some foreign scholars have published monographs on Angela Carter. In her monograph Angela Carter, Linden Peach (1998) discusses the development of criticism in Carter’s novels and works. Heidi Yeandle’s (2017) monograph Angela Carter and Western Philosophy discusses the presentation of Western philosophy in her work. Marie Mulvey Roberts (2019) re-assess Carter’s impact and importance for the twenty-first century and points out she has diversity of her interests and versatility across different fields. Besides, Carter’s adaptation of the fairy tales is a focus of some scholars.
