作为一种在英国全面和全国发行的日报,时代一直扮演着非常重要的作用。被认为是第一主流报纸,时代被誉为“英国社会的忠实记录”。
The Times and English Culture
As a kind of comprehensive and nationally issued daily paper in British, The Times has been playing a very important role in the politics, economy and culture around the world. Having been regarded as the first mainstream newspapers, The Times is honoured as “the loyal recorder in British society”. It has taken a lot of changes since initially issued in 1785. Since it is issued in the UK, there is no doubt that it will exert some influence on British culture and vise versa. In this paper, first a brief introduction to the history of The Times will be given. And then the paper will be focused on a thorough discussion about how The Times has preserved British culture and on the other hand, how British culture has been changed by The Times.

The Times was initially issued in the year of 1785 which was known as The Daily Universal Register and whose founder is John Walter. It wasn’t named as The Times until the year of 1788. And John Walter became its first editor-in-chief. Under the guidance of Walter, The Times first broadened its perspectives to other European countries outside the UK especially France which won The Times a good reputation in political and financial realms. As comprehensive newspaper, The Times covers many fields including politics, science, literature and arts and it is well-reputed in each of them. During initial period, The Times was very profitable beyond any comparison. At that time, the incomes of the staff working for The Times were much higher than those working for other newspapers. In 1803 when Walter Jr. took over The Times, he further broadened its report cover and did some comprehensive reforms on the newspaper. First, in terms of management, rather than depending on the government, The Times became self-supporting relying on the revenues from advertisements and its circulation. Second, The Times got important news home and abroad published and sent reporters to many areas around the world for exclusive news. For example, the defeat of Napoleon in Waterloo in 1815 was first reported by The Times. Moreover, The Times was self-dependent on the comments and judgements made by its reporters nationwide which made it an important role in the media. Last but not least, paying a lot of attention the new technologies, The Times was the first to employ the presses powered by steam and rotary to improve its quality and speed. Thanks to Walter Jr., The Times had boasted a circulation of more than 30,000 by the year of 1847 which even surpassed the sum of the circulations of other newspapers in London.
Later on, the ownership of The Times was achieved by the Lord Northcliffe who increased the circulation to be 310,000, the Astors who had ruined The Times by conniving at the invasion of fascists in public, and Roy Thomason who was almost broken to set off the debts of The Times, respectively.

And now The Times belongs to Rubert Murdoch who is the main stakeholder of the News Corporation. After purchasing The Times at the price of 12,000,000 pounds in 1981, Murdoch immediately appointed Harold Evans to be the new editor-in-chief who has conducted large-scale reforms including the employment of new reporting and propagating technologies and more efficient management systems.
As said before, it’s inevitable that British culture will play a significant role in The Times since newspapers are invented by people and they are the products of human social development. Therefore, how does The Times have preserved the UK culture? In this paper, some typical British
