I. Introduction

1.1 Introduction to William and As I Lay Dying

William Cuthbert Faulkner (1897~1962)is the first and the most important writer emerged in the postwar period throughout the south part of theUnited States. He is primarily known and acclaimed for his novels and short stories, many of which are set in the fictionalYoknapatawphaCounty, a setting Faulkner created based onLafayetteCounty, where he spent most of his childhood. In 1950, in recognition of his contribution to American and world literature, he was awarded the Nobel Prize and two years later, two of his works, A Fable (1954) and The Reivers (1962), both won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Faulkner was born inNew Albany,Mississippi, as the oldest of four sons of Murray Charles Faulkner and Maud (Butler) Faulkner. While he was still a child, the family settled inOxfordin north-centralMississippiwhere he lived most of his life. About the age of 13, he began to compose poems. At he played quarterback on football team and suffered a broken nose. Before graduating, he dropped out school, theOxfordHigh School, and worked briefly in his grandfather's bank.

During his writing career, Faulkner writes totally 19 novels and hundreds of short stories and some film scripts, including The Sound and the Fury, Sanctuary, Light in August, etc. His works are always regarded as the reflection of the life and society in South American and they sincerely record the social unrest and consciousness crisis among theUnited Statesafter the World War One. By using his astonishing talent, he creates his math kingdom——theYoknapatawphaCountyto conduct the ebb and flow of the family history. Faulkner is adept at using symbolism and modernism practice.

As I Lay Dying is William Faulkner’s fifth novel and consistently ranked among the best novels of 20th century literature. Depending on the distinct subject matter and the conversant stream-of-consciousness skills, it helps the author establish the high position in American fiction. The book is narrated by 15 different characters over 59 chapters. Seven of the 15 voices are of the Bundren family and they reveal a web of views of life within the Bundrens. The other voices are those of neighbors and witnesses of the Bundrens. The journey in As I Lay Dying is concerned as the struggle between the humanitarism and naturalism. It is the story of the death of Addie Bundren and her family’s quest and noble or selfish motivations to honor her wish to be buried in the town ofJefferson. Even Faulkner himself regarded the book as “tour de force”. Addie’s chapter helps to understand Addie who is more than a traditional South American woman and portrays her as revengeful and deliberate, even an incarnation of feminism.

1.2 Feminism

The word “Feminism” is originated inFranceand firstly used by Americans in 1920s. In the west, the initial significant of feminism is seeking for the equality of male and female, which is distinctly showed in the franchise. But now it generally refers to:

… A collection of movements aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic and social rights and equal opportunities for women. The history of the modern western feminist movements in divided into three “waves”. The first wave refers mainly to women’s suffrage movements of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; the second refers to the ideas and actions associated with the women’s liberation movement beginning in the 1960s, while the last refers to a continuation and a reaction to the perceived failure of second-wave feminism, beginning in the 1990s.
