the speedy development of economy, American woman in the society is still in the position of “the second sex”. Traditional woman image had caused great suffering on woman’s physical and mental health, which even threaten to the future development of society. Meanwhile, conventional marriage norm limits woman’s pursuit of freedom and happiness. In addition, social etiquettes which were signs of politeness and gentleness acted as another ways of further imprisonment of woman in the house (Madson & Deborah L.,2006)Consequently, women with pioneering ideas were in retrospection of patriarchal ideology embodied in these conventions which formed hindrance for woman’s emancipation (Bacchi, C L.,1990). Therefore, “New Woman” emerged in the special historical period. The age of innocence, by narrating a simple and romantic love story, reflects the deep topic: the feminine arousal for freedom and equality. Ellen Olenska, a representative of the new woman, is obvious opposite to the traditional feminine. She dares to persuit the freedom of marriage ,the freedom of dressing, the freedom of speech, the freedom of residence, the freedom of association; she has the mature idea about the world and the life, never daydreaming all day and taking unrealistic action; she treats everyone equal and dares to break traditional Social Etiquettes.
