Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Main concepts of the industry
To start with the analysis of this information, we are going to explain the main concepts related to tourism that are relevant for our project taking into account the theory explained by different authors and their academicals researches.
2.1.1 Tourism
According to the author Peter Robinson, tourism is a phenomenon that can be found in every country of the world. From isolated nations as North Korea or inhabited nations such as the Antarctic to the idea of space tourism (Robinson & Lackey, 2013). N. Jayapalan says that this complex phenomenon “includes a variety of academic disciplines such as economics, psychology, sociology and geography” (Jayapalan, 2001), and has old ancient roots. The author also explains that “the ancient man wandered from one place to another place in search of food and shelter” (Jayapalan, 2001) gradually that need undertook “in the urge to explore new places and seek a change of environments and experiences” (Jayapalan, 2001), becoming like this in the term that we know nowadays as tourism.
For this term we can find different definitions. According to the World Tourist Organization “Tourism is a social, cultural and economic phenomenon which entails the movement of people to countries or places outside their usual environment for personal or business/professional purposes. These people are called visitors (which may be either tourists or excursionists; residents or nonresidents) and tourism has to do with their activities, some of which involve tourism expenditure” (UNWTO, n.d.). Other definition that we can find officially, corresponds to the oxford dictionary, which says “The commercial organization and operation of holidays and visits to places of interest.” (Oxford, n.d.).
