Conclusion
In conclusion, the major findings of the current research will be summarized by theauthor, and some practical recommendations for the melioration of SET and Englishteaching and learning improvement will be stated as well. Moreover, the author willindicate the limitation of the project and implications of future research in theconclusion part.
The washback of SET has been minutely studied, with the three different types ofpopular instruments. The author has worked out the answers to the research questions,and the primary findings are presented as following.
According to Alderson and Wall’s Washback Hypotheses and Hughes’basic modelof washback illustrated in Chapter One and the results analyzed in Chapter Three, wecan conclude that School-based English exam has positive washback as same asnegative washback , e.g. contents teaching and learning, objective teaching and learning,methodologies teaching and learning, attitudes teaching and learning, the teaching andlearning’s pace and sequence, the focus of teaching and learning, the learning interest,the teaching motivation and etc. While it is obvious on some aspects of teaching andlearning yet not much predominant on other aspects.
The results of data analysis state that the advantages of SET washback is more thanthe disadvantages. SET can be utilized as an instrument to evaluate thestudents’language skill for a period of time and as a prolusion for the final examinationsof English. According to the results of the test, teachers and students can know thelearning conditions then modify their teaching and learning methods according to theresults. More specifically, teachers can analyze the paper after test to get to know thelanguage difficult and key points which confuse the students, then the students canenhance their ability with the help of teachers so they will have a better performance inthe final examination. Apart from this, the results of the SET can stimulate the study motivation of students and teachers, especially when the result is not so good. With theanalysis of questionnaire, most of the students will change their learning attitude if theydon’t do well in the test, which will enable them better prepared and with moreconfidence. For the teachers, it is a good chance to communicate with the studentsespecially the students with learning difficulties. They can find out more details thatstudents have, and solve the problems with accurate purpose.
