Although linguistic deviation is a special linguistic phenomenon and possesses its ownfeatures,it still conforms to cognitive rules.Therefore,it can be interpreted by theories ofcognitive linguistics.Foreground/background theory provides people with such a cognitivetool as can be applied to explore special linguistic phenomena which seem to deviate fromhuman cognition.In this thesis,linguistic deviation can be seen as foreground andbackground knowledge which is related to the foreground can be used to understandforeground.In the following parts,this thesis will try to explain how different types oflinguistic deviations in Dickinson’s poems can be interpreted from the perspective offoreground/background theory.

7.1 Major Findings
The thesis attempts to dig into how readers understand linguistic deviations inDickinson’s poems from the perspective of foreground/background theory.From the essentialand main body of the research,the understanding of linguistic deviations in Dickinson’spoems from a cognitive perspective is demonstrated.
Several major research findings are as follows:
Firstly,foreground/background theory serves as an effective,creative,and indispensablecognitive device for interpretation of linguistic deviations in poetry,providing a tentative wayfor the analysis of linguistic deviations in Dickinson’s poems.
Secondly,the characteristics of Dickinson’s poems are elucidated.Dickinson is a poetwho is good at employing linguistic deviations to express her complicated thoughts.Herunique literary style in poems is achieved through numerous deviation devices.According toAppendix B,Dickinson tends to use subject-verb disagreement,personification,capitalization,and rhymes to achieve linguistic deviations and the uniqueness and complexity of her poems.
Thirdly,language in poetry often deviates from grammatical rules,thereby giving risingto aesthetic significance.In Dickinson’s poems,she uses linguistic deviations to achieve thebeauty of music and the beauty of wonder.Moreover,poets always intentionally violatelanguage norms with pragmatic purposes when creating poetry.The pragmatic function of linguistic deviations in Dickinson’s poem includes complementing information,shifting thefocus,and forming a special style.
