There is no doubt that the twenty-first century is an era of economic and culturalglobalization. The translation of Chinese classical literary works is an important task, which bridges the cultural gap between China and the other nations. Chinese Tangpoetry with exquisite forms and profound ideas, as the quintessence of Chinesetraditional culture, symbolizing the wisdom of Chinese people, enjoys a grand artisticreputation and is beloved by many readers in China and abroad. The translation ofChinese Tang poetry not only can disseminate Chinese brilliant culture, but also canprosper the world literature. With the development of translation studies, there always emerges that one originalpoem may have many different translated texts. At this time, translation criticism playsan important part in bridging translation theory and practice, and promoting thedevelopment of translation better. However, translation criticism has been overlookedfor a very long time. Some critics just comment different renditions by their experienceand subjective feelings, directly leading to the misunderstanding of different translatedtexts. Accordingly, a heated topic that how to make appropriate, comprehensive andobjective criteria to judge various English versions is proposed in the realm oftranslation criticism. In 1970s, Reiss, a renowned German scholar, put forward a set oftranslation criticism theory. Compared with the criteria of binary oppositions, such aswhether faithfulness or not, whether equivalence or not and so on, Reiss’s theory ismore systematic and renders an possible way to evaluate different translations.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
The author of the thesis intends to do a systematic study on the translation ofChinese Tang poetry, especially intends to make a fair assessment of the translationdone by a few notable translators from the perspective of Reiss’s translation criticismtheory. The past studies on the translation of Tang poetry are always confined to make comparisons among different translators’ works to judge whose translation is the best. But the fact is that there is no best translation, just as no one is perfect in the world. Alltranslations have their own merits and defects. Seldom have the researchers applied to aspecific theory to make a systematic study on different renditions.By a systematic and detailed analysis of different translations of Chinese Tangpoetry with Reiss’s theory, on the one hand, it can make the evaluation of Chinese Tangpoetry more comprehensive and objective, and can also rectify misunderstandings ofsome English versions made by other critics previously. On the other hand, in theprocess of doing the research, the researcher could learn some translation skills whichare used by these translators intentionally or unconsciously in their translated texts. Theauthor wishes that this thesis can inspire more young men with zeal to focus on thepoetry translation criticism, and shoulder the responsibility of translating Chinese Tangpoetry to glorify Chinese traditional culture.
