the localization process, on the one hand, translators need to meet the client's requirements to express the intended meaning, and on the other hand, they also need to make linguistic choices from the user's perspective to avoid misunderstandings and confusion. The achievement of this goal depends to a large extent on the consistency of translation, which is reflected not only in the accurate correspondence between t he target text and its function but also in the agreement between the target texts and the software style. Therefore, this section analyzes the mental states of the user and client, and how translation adapts to their mental world.

4.1.1 Assumed Mental States of the User and Client

The client (the initiator of localization tasks) intends to build a platform with two major functions: language learning and social community, constituting its unique characteristics. In our daily lives, social apps are indispensable. Well-known social applications both domestically and internationally include WeC hat, Instagram, and Facebook. As for language learning apps, Duolingo and Tandem are highly favored by language learners. To help users adapt to the new app more quickly, the client hopes that translators refer to the translations of similar apps for the same functions to maintain the consistency of the macro context of educational apps, and creatively translate the distinctive features of their own product to provide user s with a fresh experience. In section 4.2.1 the relationship between the translator and the client will be introduced in detail.

Chapter Five Conclusion

Software localization is different from other types of translation activities. To enable software to successfully go abroad, translation needs to achieve a goal, which is to make users in the target locale feel like they are using software from their own country. This thesis makes a conclusion from the perspective of the adaptation theory, that a successful localized version of software necessitates the high-degree adaptation of translations to the three contextual correlates. First, the mental world involves the user’s information processing and the client’s intentions to build a professional brand, both requiring consistent translation of features, products, and language styles within the software.

Second, the social world encompasses social settings and institutions outside and inside the software and culture context in the source text. Outside the software, the institutions request that the translator should take into consideration the opinions and suggestions raised by the client. Inside the software, the translator should ensure their translations remain consistent with the language style of the source text in different modules. In terms of cultural context, the translator tends to use the domestication translation method to reduce cultural unfamiliarity and reading barriers.

Third, the physical world influences the translator’s linguistic choices in three aspects. The first is that the target language needs to be determined by specific countries, even if the same language is used by different countries, they will have different language variants and usage conventions. The second is that translators should effectively utilize the contextual information provided by the user interface to ensure the accuracy, smoothness, and naturalness of the translation. The third is to accurately adapt the variables in the text to the grammar rules of the target language.
