INVESTORS IN PEOPLE (IIP - 1037 words)
Introduction: In today's competitive environment, the focus on the customer offered by adherence to the principles of Quality Management offers an opportunity for success. People are seen as one of the keys to Quality Management success. The tool of Investors in People is a mechanism for improving the skills base of the workforce.

Brief Overview of the IIP technique:
Investors in People (IIP) was developed in the 1990s to progress an organisation's performance through its employees. These standards were designed by a committee of leading businesses and national organizations to produce a framework that can be used by management to assess the standards of employees' performance.. This framework provides the basis of what needs to be achieved leading the way for the organisation to decide how to meet the framework (www.cipd.co.uk/subjects).

William Hawkins, HR Director of Aston Bottling Plant says "IIP was a great help to us as it focused all management on what was required to get the most out of our employees. Hence there was little discussion on what was required. IlP provided this so as management we could concentrate on how we achieved the IIP framework" (www.investorsinpeople.co.uk).

IIP trained auditors visit organizations to assess if the standards are being maintained. They can also offer advice on implementing the standard prior to an assessment audit (www.investorsinpeople.co.uk). Once introduced, the standard should be reviewed every three years to ensure it is up to date and still applicable.

The application of IIP is set in three principles, Plan, Do and Review (www.investorsinpeople.co.uk). Under each of these three ‘principles’ a number of strategies are recommended for improving the performance of an organisation through its people (www.investorsinpeople.co.uk). (See figure 1).
In the 'Planning' stage, business strategies are developed to meet each of the areas where the organisation is perceived to be weak. In the "Do" stage, these strategies are put to work to improve the performance of the organisation. And finally there is an assessment of the impact of these actions on business performance (See figure 1 ).
IIP provides a proven framework to achieve business improvement through its people. It applies equally to any type or size of organization but recognises that how this framework is achieved will be different in different organisations, IIP does not recommend the 'how'.

How IIP fits with the QM principles:
A QM principle is that "People are the most important factor in achieving success of any business and to achieve the best performance, people need to be given the right knowledge, skills and
