1.1 Background of This Interpreting Practice
1.1.1 Significance
Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020,people’s lives and workhave been greatly impacted,with many meetings and activities being held online.Thishas reduced the cost of holding meetings,and in the post-pandemic era,onlinemeetings and activities may become a new trend.As a result,interpreters may havemore opportunities to provide remote services,making it important to deepen researchon remote interpreting to keep up with the changing times and enrich related research.
Moreover,with the rapid development of economic globalization andinternational trade,business and trade exchanges between countries are becomingincreasingly frequent.Many domestic and foreign companies often seek resources andfunds through business cooperation to expand their business and become stronger.Inthe face of the normalization of the pandemic and the progress of remotecommunication technologies,distance business cooperation or negotiation maybecome more common.Therefore,studying this issue has practical significance andcan provide guidance for distance business interpreting practice.Overall,the study ofremote interpreting in the context of the pandemic and international trade can provideinsights into new trends and challenges in the field,and help interpreters better adaptto the changing environment and provide high-quality services to clients.
1.2 A Brief Introduction to the Practice
1.2.1 Task Arrangement
In May 2022,while looking for an internship from the Internet,the interpreterfound a recruitment notice for foreign teaching assistant interns.And the interpretercontacted the company manager,hoping to get an internship position.During the chat,the interpreter learned that the company manager wanted to cooperate with auniversity foreign teacher to develop business English,TOEFL and IELTS courses inorder to expand the company’s business.And the two parties had previouslycommunicated about cooperation by email,but had not yet held formal talks toexchange ideas.Considering it was a valuable exercise opportunity,the interpreterbegan to actively fight for it,explaining the situation to the person in charge andhoping to get the practice opportunities.After the interview,the interpreter wasnotified by the company manager and successfully secured this business negotiationpractice opportunity.
By communicating with the person in charge,the interpreter learned that thebusiness negotiation was expected to be held for 2-3 rounds,and the topic ofnegotiation was investment cooperation on curriculum development.It was estimatedthat the first round of business negotiation would be held in June or July,which wouldmainly confirm the cooperative intention and basic idea of both parties and set thebasic framework of cooperation.At that time,the pandemic prevention and controlstill remained grim,in order to avoid unnecessary personal contact,the person incharge decided to hold the business negotiation online,using the internal system ofthe company-the New Wellspring Online Course.
