There are sixelements in R. Jacobson’s mode: code, context, sender, receiver, contact channel, message. Generallyspeaking, Jacobson believes that six functions permeate languages. They are representational, expressive, conative, phatic, metalingual, and poetic function. It seems that Jacobson’s mode has not been attractingattention till so far partly because it is far more complicated and abstract than Buhler’s. Although Newmarkonce said that Jacobson’s mode is made for translation studies, he mainly adopts Buhler’s mode whenanalyzing language function and text type (Newmark, 1988:40; Zhang Meifang, 2009:54).Nida and Taber (1969:24-26) presented three kinds of text types:informative text, expressive text andimperative text. Similarly, W. Wilss brings forward that text has three functions: descriptive, appellativeand expressive. Descriptive function focuses on the neutral reference between information-source andreceiver. Appellative function focuses on the reference of the information-source. Expressive functionfocuses on the reference of the receiver (Wilss, 1988:107).
