Detailed Description:
This painting makes a vivid illustration of how Derain makes the use of apparent perspective as well as diagonal recession into space. A higher good viewpoint leads to a whole panorama: where figures are busy on the shore, with rocking sails and boats against a setting of blue and green mountains perched nearby and pink clouds roaring in the sky. The winding shoreline and rhythmic overlapping sails extend our eyesight into the picture. Two men seated and rather like viewers, appreciate the scene of energy. Its palette is Fauvist: unnatural but vibrant. From this painting, Derain was up to indulge himself to Fauvism’s impetuosity, making austere, single-colored and Cubist-inspired works.
